The client is a top-tier restaurant management platform providing seamless integration across front-of-house, back-of-house, and out-of-house operations. It empowers restaurants to optimize workflows, boost efficiency, and deliver exceptional customer service. The client faced challenges with scaling and maintaining a self-managed MongoDB database on AWS EC2 and inefficient reporting caused by fragmented data across multiple sources. The client required a dependable, scalable, and efficient data warehouse solution with an agile business insight reporting pipeline. 

We addressed the client’s challenges by proposing a migration to BigQuery, a fully managed and scalable cloud data warehouse that simplifies database management and enhances performance. We suggested the use of HevoData to transfer data from MongoDB to BigQuery. Looker was then utilized to create advanced BI dashboards, delivering improved data visualization and actionable insights.

The Challenge

The client faced multiple obstacles that impacted their ability to manage data efficiently and derive meaningful insights for decision-making. This was mainly stemming from: 

• A self-managed MongoDB database on AWS EC2, which was difficult to scale and maintain
• Inefficient reporting due to data fragmentation across multiple sources

Our Solution

To solve these challenges, we proposed migrating to BigQuery – a fully managed, scalable, and serverless cloud data warehouse. BigQuery eliminates the operational overhead of database management, offers seamless scalability to handle growing data volumes, and delivers faster query performance, making it easier to manage and analyze data efficiently.

To address the challenge of fragmented data, it was proposed to use Hevo Data, a tool for transferring data from MongoDB to BigQuery. The sample data from this activity was used as a foundation for performing transformations and laid the groundwork for developing reports in the subsequent phases. 

We utilized Looker to build advanced BI reports and dashboards, providing enhanced data visualization and business intelligence capabilities to drive better insights and decision-making.
