Karate to Clarity
It was a Tuesday morning in fifth grade. Abhishek Hegde stood with his friends around a notice board, choosing co-curricular activities. Voices overlapped, fingers pointed, and decisions were made in seconds. His decision, however, had already been made. His parents had enrolled him in karate for its focus on discipline and self-defence.
No one expected what would happen when he stepped onto the mat. A school activity soon became an indispensable part of the routine. The routine became a commitment. Over the next fifteen years, that unyielding commitment led to a black belt, more than thirty trophies, and a gold medal while representing India.

Today, Abhishek Hegde is a Lead Business Analyst at Niveus Solutions, part of NTT DATA. He works at the intersection of business and technology, helping organisations solve complex challenges. Beyond the corporate role, however, Abhishek has been a lifelong karate practitioner. He is also a formidable competitor and a respected sensei.
From Student to Sensei
There are teachers, and then there are the ones who change you. His mentor, Ashley Nihal, was the steady hand behind every medal and tournament. Every time Abhishek wanted to give up, his mentor’s support kept him going. He didn’t just teach karate; he taught Abhishek how to believe in the pursuit itself.

When his mentor moved to Australia, Abhishek felt the weight of everything he had been given. And instead of letting it sit idle, he decided to pass it forward. With his friend by his side, he opened The Champions Hub, a space built from gratitude and a purpose – larger than any competition. The mission was never just about winning trophies and medals. It was about walking into a room of youngsters and convincing them that they are stronger than they know.
The Moment That Defined It All
Some moments in life don’t just mark you but define you. For Abhishek, that moment came in 2015, on the floor of the 20th Asian and International WFSKO Cup in Mumbai, with India’s colours on his chest and the eyes of the world on him.

But when he speaks of that day, the medals are never the first thing he mentions. It is the feeling. The weight of representing a billion people in a sport he had chased since fifth grade. The quiet realisation, standing on that international stage, that every sacrifice had been worth it.

Not the End of the Journey
Every karateka knows that the fight doesn’t always end with a bow. Sometimes it ends with a decision made quietly, alone, far from the mat.
For Abhishek, that decision came in 2016. His engineering career was beginning, a new arena with its own demands, pressures, and unforgiving pace. An injury in this phase wasn’t just a physical setback; it was a professional one. And with the future still unwritten, still uncertain, he chose to protect what he was building, even if it meant letting go of the competition floor he had called home for over a decade.

It was, by his own admission, a pretty tough decision. But toughness is not about never backing down. It is about knowing which fights to choose. Today, Abhishek remains woven into the fabric of karate, not as a competitor, but as a referee, his eyes sharp, his presence steady, his love for the sport unchanged. He stepped back from the fight. He never stepped away from karate.
The Best of Both Worlds
Abhishek’s story is not about choosing between a career and a passion. It is about refusing to choose! At Niveus, in every system he analyses and every problem he solves, Abhishek doesn’t just bring his skills to the table. He brings everything the mat ever taught him. With the support of his managers and Niveus’ enabling environment, he continues to pursue karate alongside his role, staying grounded, focused, and resilient in his approach to work challenges.
The values Abhishek lives by: discipline, integrity, and a commitment to excellence, align closely with Niveus’ focus on innovation and empathy. It’s not just a workplace for him; it’s a natural fit.

What’s next? More students. More workshops. Self-defence programmes for girls who deserve to feel strong in a world that isn’t always easy. And somewhere between the spreadsheets and the sparring, a man who proves every single day that your greatest professional asset might just be the passion you almost left behind.
