Tackling Python: Akshay’s Mission From Snakes to Scripts
When a hulivesha, or tiger dance, performer is seen holding a python in his hand, people stop and take notice. Akshay Nagesh Shet’s story is one of such contrasts, where cutting-edge cloud technology meets the raw unpredictability of the wild. As a Cloud Specialist at Niveus Solutions, he spends his weekdays tackling complex technical challenges, designing systems that power businesses, and transforming operations. Outside the office, however, his focus shifts to his role as an animal rescue specialist and wildlife enthusiast. Guided by the belief in the value of every life, he leads a team of conservationists who rescue snakes, run awareness drives, and build a conservation movement across coastal Karnataka. He recently went viral after pausing a Hulivesha performance to rescue a snake, still in full tiger dance makeup and costume.
Hailing from Gundibail and a graduate of Canara Engineering College, Akshay has built a life that connects two worlds often seen as unrelated. He is a wildlife rescuer, an environmental educator, and a passionate advocate for biodiversity, while also excelling as a cloud architect. His journey is proof that a career and a calling can move in parallel to create change that matters.
The spark for this mission was lit when Akshay was 18, after frequent snake sightings near his home drew him into the world of wildlife rescue. What began as a personal attempt to respond to these encounters has since grown into a structured effort focused on education, rescue operations, and environmental conservation — laying the foundation for a movement that continues to expand.
UCHUU TRUST: Protecting the Voiceless
Today, Akshay is the founder of UCHUU TRUST (Udupi Snake in the City), a registered wildlife rescue and awareness organization that operates across the Udupi district. With a dedicated team of volunteers, UCHUU TRUST has carried out over 1500 snakes and wildlife rescues, involving both venomous and non-venomous species, including Spectacled Cobras, Russell’s Vipers, Indian Rock Pythons, Rat Snakes, and Kukri Snakes. Akshay has also participated in leopard rescue operations, elephant redirection efforts, and interventions involving orphaned or injured wildlife, including civet cats, baby squirrels, porcupines, monkeys, and birds.
UCHUU TRUST collaborates closely with the Forest Department, with Akshay being recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for his contributions to wildlife conservation and public education, awarded on December 14, 2024. His work has also been featured in The Times of India, highlighting the trust’s impact on local ecosystems and communities. He has conducted over 40 awareness sessions across government schools, colleges, and rural communities, busting myths about snakes and wild animals.
Akshay is now working toward launching Karnataka’s first wildlife rehabilitation center, based in Udupi, a space that will provide treatment, recovery, and release support for injured animals. He is also actively exploring ways to integrate technology into wildlife conservation, aiming to create smarter systems for tracking, rescue coordination, and education.
